What Can I Say?

I see that it has been over five years since my last <strike>confession</strike> entry. I couldn't have even hazarded a guess. I've spent most of that time on Twitter. I thought I'd hate it, but that's where most of my friends were, and eventually I got accustomed, and even grew to like some things about it. Twitter (I will never call it X) is not so likable since The Muskening, so I thought it might be a good time to try to reestablish a foothold of some sort over here. (I am also chemm80 on Blue Sky.) I've heard that LJ crossposting no longer works, so I may try to copy this over there, or I may not. I guess we'll see.

( Five Years in a Nutshell, Or, Our Healthcare System is a Shitshow )

How about you guys?
Of the personal

My abysmal posting habits have made this some sort of annual tradition, I suppose, The State of the Chemm address, or something. In case you were wondering, 2017 was not a great year for me. And nothing really horribly awful happened to any of my family members, we're all in decent health, I'm grateful to report, but it was still pretty unpleasant mentally/emotionally.

( The hard stuff )

( Onward to bigger and better things )

comments

Of the fannish

Hello! I'm back! I find it sad that I only manage to post here about once a year these days, but it sort of looks like other people are coming back to DW/LJ? A little? Maybe?

I still get a tiny bit sad when I see how much smaller the SPN newsletter on LJ is these days, but I actually read and commented on Sam/Dean fic this morning! I really don't know how long it's been since I've done that. I still watch SPN, too, although in a less... passionate manner than I used to, obviously. I guess I'll never be at the point that I'm not open to talking about that show, though, if you're so inclined.

And not to get all crazy or anything, but I agreed to do a beta on a J2 Big Bang fic this morning? What has gotten into me? I don't even know. (Well, I kind of do, in that 2018 is shaping up to be a waaaay better year than 2017 was, but I'm saving all that RL stuff for another post.)

I saw Mazerunner: The Death Cure on opening day! That's pretty much unheard of for me, seeing a movie on the day it comes out, but it's all thanks to beadslut, who invited me on a long distance movie date which I quite enjoyed. The plot was kind of WTF, the effects were "whoa, baby, way WTF," but I did think it was the best of the three Mazerunner movies, to the point it almost made me want to read the books. Of course Dylan O'Brien was the big draw of the flick for me, and he did not disappoint. Definitely the best part, and fortunately for my peace of mind, the scene where he had that awful accident was near the beginning so we could get it over with and not have to think it about it anymore. He's such a good actor, and I'm happy to see his career is back on track (American Assassin anyone?) and his face looks pretty good again.

I've begun to get back into watching TV again as well, especially Netflix stuff. I'm all caught up on Grace and Frankie, The Ranch, and Stranger Things and still enjoying all of those. I see that The Expanse is back on Amazon, so I'm looking forward to getting caught up with that again.

I also just watched the first season of Wynonna Earp and am definitely going to watch S2 when it comes to Netflix in April (I think). I do get the SyFy channel, though, so I've set the DVR so I can watch S3 in real time. It's a show that speaks to my cheesy genre show-loving heart, and heeeyyy... ladies. Lots of lady characters. There's even a canon f/f ship, which goes by the charming portmanteau of "WayHaught," lol.

Until then, I've finally gotten around to watching Haven. (This is also on beadslut, who implanted the show into my brain while I was semi-conscious at Wincon Dallas.) I'm not madly shipping anyone or anything, but Nathan staring soulfully into the distance and Duke being... Duke are a nice background for stitching to.

What about you guys? Talk fandom to me, baby.

comments

Podfic: With or Without You by KouriArashi

Title: With Or Without You
Author: KouriArashi
Fandom, Pairing: Teen Wolf, Stiles/Derek
Rating: PG? Gore/violence is alluded to. Not sexually explicit.
Summary: Derek thinks that the mating rituals are overly romanticized bullshit, but claiming a mate and defending them from challengers is something werewolves do, and his pack can't afford to appear weak after the fire. Especially not when Deucalion and his friends are in town for the rituals. Enter Stiles Stilinski, who offers to let Derek claim him so he won't be overrun at the ceremonies. Nothing goes as expected.
Reader's Notes: This poor recording has been languishing on my hard drive for *squints* about a year and a half? Anyway, it's a sign of how lovely it is that I wanted to get it finished and posted after all that time. Also the fact that it's not explicit at all. I KNOW. Unheard of, from me, but there it is.

Length: 6:47:08

.rar file (Right-click and Save-As to download) || 584 MB

(Note: .rar files are like .zip files—they're compressed and packaged files that allow me to upload multiple files faster, and in one go.
You simply have to download the file and extract the .mp3 files to your computer/device.
Pet adjacent

Hello, my lovelies! I find myself for the first time in ages with a day where there's nothing I really HAVE to accomplish. What a gift! Except... it's been so long I hardly knew what to do with myself. I wound up browsing DW/LJ for the first time in ages. Pretty nice, if a bit weird. I even read a fic, and commented, and everything! Will wonders never cease?

The one thing I have been doing lately is complaining (on Twitter) about all the pets in my house, so for no particular reason, I decided to post about them. Here is the natural history of our home-based zoo (in order of acquisition), complete with pictures!

( Good grief it's been so long I forgot how to html )

And hey, that's what pets are for, right? So we don't have to be alone? I'm pretty far away from that to be sure.

So I dedicate this post to beloved pets everywhere. Feel free to share your pet stories and pictures in comments!

comments

I just came here to... two years? Are you kidding me?

DW/LJ I have missed you! I say this all the time, only on Twitter, not DW/LJ. I don't know how we became so estranged, my friends, but can we maybe pick up where we left off?

I very seriously don't know where to start. I came over a couple of days ago to (somewhat begrudgingly and befrazzled-ly) tweak an old podfic post, and I realized: it's been TWO YEARS since I posted here. Two years, tomorrow, in fact. I knew it had been too long, but really?

Where has the time gone? I've been... busy. Yes. A lot has happened. And not knowing where to start talking about that is a big reason I keep putting off posting. The longer I wait, the more intimidating and overwhelming it seems. Perhaps a list:

THINGS WOT I HAVE DONE IN THE LAST TWO YEARS:

- Sent child #3 (of 4) off to college, 300 miles away.
- Helped child #1 (and only girl) finish physical therapy clinicals, get her doctorate, get her first job, get her second job, buy her first home, 100 miles from me.
- Sent child #4 off to college, 22 miles away. (That just happened a couple of weeks ago.)

I've worked a lot, including finishing 15 audiobooks that are now on sale on Audible, iTunes and Amazon. I've traveled to a LOT of ball games. And that's pretty much it. But it feels like I was swallowed by a black hole of busyness for the last two years. A fun and rewarding black hole, but still.

I won't pretend that my newly empty "nest" has nothing to do with this sudden ability to write a post. I actually do have fewer obligations and responsibilities now. For the first time in 29 years (today-my eldest's birthday), I'm not responsible for another human being.

Emotionally I've had some...moments...this last week or so. It's been hard, and I don't think that's over yet. But I have this tendency to compartmentalize, to push away unpleasant feelings, and I'm trying really hard not to do that at this juncture. I'm trying to deal with the sad feelings, the sensation of loss and being lost, the bewildered wondering "where do I go from here?" and not just squash them down and push it away so it can fester and turn into something monumentally bad. Not doing that this time. Suggestions from others who have been here are welcomed.

But there are good things, too, and they are not to be minimized or shunted aside either. It's SO much easier to cook for two people than for 3, or 4, or 6. The dishwasher takes three days to get full, and I can do my laundry whenever I want, since the machines are always free. I can even find an empty laundry basket without searching the entire house (and emptying it of clean/dirty/whatever clothes before I can use it). Even eating out is way cheaper and easier, logistically. The house stays clean an incomprehensibly long time. Or at least the couple of rooms I've managed to clean so far have.

And I have a laundry list of activities and pastimes that I put aside for the day when the kids didn't need me anymore. Things like singing, revisiting old and new musical instruments, writing, and general fannish play, and I'm almost ready for all of that "me" time to commence.

What do you say, friends? Care to join me?

ETA: It was only one year. Whew! That makes me feel a little bit better.

comments

I've been putting off posting this for reasons unknown (ditto a post about personal stuff), but now I'm biting the bullet. MLB AU! Hope you guys enjoy... more soon. I love and miss you all!

Title: Extra Innings
Author: Tuesdaymidnight
Fandom, Pairing: Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles
Rating: Explicit
Summary: Stiles Stilinski is a minor league baseball catcher who just got promoted. Derek Hale is a star major league pitcher with a knee injury who just got sent down to the minors. Stiles is drawn to Derek, but the further invested he gets, the more questions arise. Why does team owner Chris Argent have it out for Derek? Why is Derek so emotionally constipated? And what the hell is Coach Finstock going on about? Minor league baseball has more intrigue than Stiles ever imagined.

Length: A little over 4 hours?
My so-called fannish life

What, ho... two posts in less than a week! What next? Actually returning emails and commenting on posts? It's like sex, I guess. The more you do it, the more you want to do it.

Obviously I don't have a LOT of time lately for TV and such, but I have taken time for a few things that qualify as fannish.

I've made flight and hotel reservations for Wincon! Please hit me up beforehand if you're going to Pittsburgh... it seems like it's going to be a big con this year, and I don't want to miss meeting/seeing/getting reacquainted with a single one of you lovely humans!

( UnReal )

( China Beach )

( And I had some thoughts on Teen Wolf )

comments

Where all da women at?

*knocks* Is anyone home?

I haven't been around in a while, it's true. I have one child left at home out of four, and he's a senior this coming year, so there's been a lot to be done for that, including a campus visit to Yale, which is roughly 2000 miles from us. Plus, I'm trying to soak up everything I can from the time we have left with him. That's busy-making and time-consuming. So is working part-time at three different jobs.

The lab job is as demanding and not fun as ever. We can't keep staff around, the Mothership just keeps circling into higher and higher orbits of lunacy, and although I'm sick of it, we're about to pay off our house, and I think the hubs would lose his shit if I tried to quit the job altogether. I can't reasonably go back to working weekends only, either, with the department so short-handed. My coworkers would barbecue me with their Laser Eyes of Hate. Or something.

The audiobook recording is going great guns, if not being all that lucrative yet. I just finished a really fun steampunk book that should go on sale within the next few weeks; I'll link that here when it does. I'm also about to start recording the fourth book (my third) in Sharon Woods Hopkins' Rhetta McCarter series.

But none of that is really what has been keeping me from being fannish, I don't think. I just don't have any fandom that really inspires me at the moment. I mean yeah, there are the old faves that I can still read or record, like SPN and Teen Wolf (I'm currently working on a podfic of a Derek/Stiles baseball AU), and the shows I like a lot but haven't gotten fannishly productive about, like The Red Road, but nothing that's really grabbed me by my (metaphorical) balls.

Still, I decided this morning to just browse around and see what I could see. And ran smack into this:

Truth and Consequence by astolat
Chapters: 2/2
Fandom: Fast and the Furious Series
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Brian O'Conner/Dominic Toretto, Letty Ortiz/Dominic Toretto, Brian O'Conner/Mia Toretto, Brian O'Conner/Letty Ortiz/Dominic Toretto/Mia Toretto, Brian O'Conner/Letty Ortiz, Letty Ortiz/Mia Toretto
Characters: Dominic Toretto, Brian O'Conner, Mia Toretto, Letty Ortiz
Additional Tags: Foursome
Series: Part 6 of Fast & Furious works
Summary:
Three weeks after the plane crash, Brian sat down on the beach next to him, threw another empty coconut into the water, and said, “All right, come on. Other side of the island and back, have to get one of the mangos on the eastern beach on the way. Winner gets to fuck the loser.”

I don't care if you have no idea who these people are (although I don't know how that's possible), it's one of the best, maybe THE best, poly fic I've ever read. It's not just sex, although that's there and it's FANTASTIC, it's sweet and beautiful and right without being too easy. I have no idea how the author managed to cram so much relationship and hurt and love and weirdness into one 2-chapter story, but well... it's Astolat, so. Just go, read.

Otherwise, I've been spending what little fannish time I have over on Twitter, which actually kind of suits the time constraints I have right now, but isn't always as satisfying as I remember DW/LJ being. Although at least there are people there, usually. Anyone here?

ETA: Aannd I've just realized this was remarkably similar to my previous post two months ago. Ugh.

comments

My Four Giant Children (and other stories): A book by chemm80

I had planned to work for a while this morning, but it's very rainy. That's always EXCELLENT news out here, but it does make the internet sort of iffy. Plus, waking up to all the lovely birthday wishes (apparently even Google knows it's my BD? Weird. Also creepy) sucked me down the rabbit hole of DW/LJ and Twitter. Sorry, not sorry.

It's funny how, when I go through long periods when don't have time for my fannish places, I don't even realize how much I HAVE TO SAY. And now it all just wants to spill out at once, and I don't know where to start, but I'll give it a shot.

Perhaps with fannish stuff.

I've kind of lost track of SPN, but I see there are people still enjoying it, which makes me happy in a sentimental kind of way, not the least reason being that I wouldn't even be here without it, plus almost all of my dear fannish friends were acquired because of that show. It's odd how, in my little corner of fandom, friends from newer fandoms seem to come and go, but the old SPN crowd sticks together.

I actually don't have much TV to watch at the moment, since Sons of Anarchy and Justified have both ended, as has The Red Road, which is a newer interest, and a show I highly recommend <strike>and not just because Jason Momoa is unfairly attractive</strike>. Basically it's about a small town in New Jersey adjacent to a reservation, but it's very character-driven and I (rather obviously, I think) really love that. There's a lot of culture clash stuff that I don't necessarily feel qualified to criticize, and a really sharply contrasting juxtaposition of the very traditional nuclear family of the Jensens, and Marie's found, it-takes-a-village family. But I think what really appeals to me the most is the theme of growing up in a small town generation after generation, something I do know well in my own life. Regardless, it's pretty rich story-wise and character-wise, and well worth a watch. (S1 is on Netflix and S2 just ended on the Sundance channel.)

I have been around these parts, peripherally, because of podfic and Amplificathon. What an amazing output of podfic was had, too! I wasn't quite as productive in quantity as some years, because of RL and specifically, working on producing professional audiobooks, but in the true spirit of Amplificathon, I did dabble in some under-represented fandoms this year and it was quite enjoyable. (I discovered I really like the idea of Johnny Utah/Brian O'Conner, for one thing. :)

Speaking of audiobooks, the one I'm working on now is a lot of fun. Tess Mercury and the Crooked Pink The Audiobook aka Wherein Chemm80 Affects a Dubious Southern (Georgia) Accent for The Entire Book. Meanwhile, Sharon Woods Hopkins' Rhetta McCarter "Killer" series is available on Audible, Amazon and iTunes. (I have download codes if you want to listen and leave a review.)

Meanwhile, I'm also putting in a lot of hours at the lab because they're available and I have various expensive travel-type things coming up that need paying for. But THE most time-consuming thing, at least for the last couple of weeks and for several to come, is the fact that my youngest child (of four) is mere days away from becoming a high school senior. I have feelings about this, as you might expect, but they'll have to wait for full consideration and mulling at some time when I am not so fucking busy running after him.

( Cut for kid talk and mom bragging )

Thank you all so very much for the birthday wishes and for being my friends. I cannot possibly express how much you all mean to me. ♥♥♥

comments

Podfic: Breaking Point by Norah

Title: Breaking Point
Author: Norah
Fandom, Pairing: Point Break/The Fast and the Furious, Johnny Utah/Brian O'Conner
Rating: Explicit
Summary: A Point Break/The Fast and the Furious crossover romance with a sexuality crisis, surfing, a vaguely self-insertish OFC, and lots of beer and sex. Johnny Utah/Brian O'Conner.
Reader's Notes: I really had never thought about the similarities between these two movies. I'm a little slow.
Technical Difficulties

Hey, guys, it seems like there's a problem with the server where my podfic is hosted. I hope it's just a temporary thing, but I'll let you know as soon as I do. Until I get things figured out, try the archived links on the podfics that have one and... stand by. Thanks.

ETA: Seems okay as of 10:30 pm MST 4/8/2015. Please let me know if you have further issues.

comments

His shirt was rumpled where Stiles had his hands in it, and he was breathing hard as well, chest heaving. His eyes—his eyes were glazed over and he looked stunned, like he’d been—like Stiles had—

“No,” Stiles said, blood draining from his face. The word was croaky and felt like it had to be wrenched out of his chest. “God, no.”

Length: 2:02:02

MP3

comments

Podfic: A Swinger of Birches by DrunkTuesdays

Title: A Swinger of Birches
Author: DrunkTuesdays
Fandom, Pairing: Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles
Rating: Teen and Up
Summary: The artifact takes him to a dark cave, one he hasn’t seen before. If he’d been back longer, gotten back in the paranoid mindset needed to survive Beacon Hills, that alone would have stopped him. There’s no part of the Preserve that he hasn’t ran through, no tree, no leaf, no rock he doesn’t know. He’s off balance and unready so he skids right into the entrance, stops only when the light on the stone winks right out. He’s turning to face Scott and Stiles, but there’s a rumble, and he has just enough time to throw himself to the ground, to duck and protect his head as rocks fall around him, the ceiling to the cave collapsing with a choking cloud of dust.

Length: 00:19:17

MP3 (Click for streaming link; Right-click and Save-As to download) || MB
Archived link

Or stream:

comments

Title: A Road Too Far
Author: sylvanwitch
Fandom, Pairing: Generation Kill, Brad/Nate
Rating: Mature
Author's Summary: April 2006. Bermel District, Paktika Province, Afghanistan. In the most dangerous corner of the most dangerous country in the world, Nate Fick, aka Nick Frazier, makes arms deals for the CIA under the cover of a civilian aid worker. At Firebase Shkin, aka "The Alamo," Brad Colbert trains Afghani counter-terrorist teams and wonders why he chose to serve. The men they were meet the men they've become and discover that some things are even more treacherous than the forty klicks of IED-riddled, insurgent-shadowed road that divide them.
Reader's Notes: This is an author with whom you can never go wrong, but she's really outdone herself here. Reading something aloud always changes the experience of the story, and in this case, the recording really brought out (at least in my mind) the melancholy feel of a country and a people forced to live with war, damaged by it, but not beaten. The Nate and Brad of this story provide a striking parallel, in the men they've become since the series's end: older and perhaps wiser men, but not gentle.

Cover by endeni

Length: Approx 8 hours

.rar file of MP3s (Click to download) || 739.3 MB

comments
